A pair of George IV Rosewood Bergere Chairs c. 1830
In the manner of Gillows, Lancaster. The over-scrolled upholstered backs with padded arms and seats, the square moulded front rails centred by rectangular bead moulded panels with curved acanthus leaf carved arms, turned and tapered reeded legs with brass cap castors.
John Loudon, a Scot, was a prolific compiler of b ooks, in particular his Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture. The Encyclopaedia with over 2,000 engravings proved a mine of information on furnishing for a growing middle class. The inspiration for this popular form of Bergere, produced by many leading furniture makers, is based on Loudon’s designs and reproduced by Edward T. Joy in Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design. 1977.
