A pair of late Regency Caned Bergeres

Attributed to Gillows, Lancaster.

The curved bar toprails with incised bell flower decoration above curved backs and foliate scrolled arm supports on ring turned tapering legs terminating in brass cappings and castors.

NB : The superb quality of the timber and the incised decoration would indicate a leading firm of cabinet makers, almost certainly Gillows. c. 1825

The firm of Gillows became one of the leading English designers and furniture makers during the second half of the 18th century and the 19th century. Founded in Lancaster by Robert Gillow (1703-73) and joined later by his sons Richard in 1757 and Robert. Robert opened the London warehouse c. 1765, thereby increasing their market and reaching a new wealthy professional class and an overseas clientele. The company continued as Waring and Gillow until 1974. Their clients included many of the northern and Scottish gentry including The Duke of Atholl, The Earls of Strafford and Derby.
