REF 1843
An unusual mid 18th century Palladian Pier Mirror
An architectural looking glass, decorated with shell detailing and retaining its original finish.
By repute from Newhailes East Lothian House Scotland.
Newhails arguably the most important Palladian house in Scotland has shells spotted in every conceivable place, even as part of the door furniture, in which tiny cockleshells hide the keyholes. And in several instances they are not imitations but genuine seashells, gilted for decoration. It is thought that this riot of shells may allude to the Rococo style adopted at Newhails by Sir James Dalrymple, 2nd Bt of Hailes, in the 1720s and 1730s.
