REF 1300

A fine extending mahogany Dining Table, William IV, c. 1835

The richly figured double moulded top with rounded ends fitted with seven additional leaves, the moulded frieze raised on four imposing cabriole legs, swathed in carved acanthus leaves, with attenuated leaf carved and scrolled brackets terminating in carved claw feet and on castors.

The outstanding quality of the timber that has been employed to make this table would indicate a maker of high standing; Gillows of Lancaster were one such firm that habitually used only the best timbers.

Henry Whitaker, one of the most versatile and informed makers of his time published Designs of Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture in the Most Modern Style in 1825 illustrating elaborate ornament and robust foliate scroll work.

For a similar attenuated treatment of scrolling brackets and a very near form of lion paw foot see, The Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th century Furniture Design, Edward Joy, Suffolk 1984, page 541, from Whitaker’s designs dated 1825.
