A Rosso antico marble mask
A rare Italian Rosso antico marble mask of Drama. In the manner of Benedetto Boschetti. Mid to late 19th Century.
The over life size mask of Tragedy is sculpted from a single block, almost certainly from an ancient Roman source of richly patinated mahogany colour. He is modelled as an elderly man with receding hair, inset wrinkled eyes, bulbous nose, large open mouth surrounded by his flowing beard and moustache. Large tear drops fall down the side of his neck. The whole mounted on a stepped moulded black marble pedestal. Circa 1860.
