A George III Arched Marginal Pier Mirror, from Plas Newydd, Anglesey
This mirror, of strongly architectural form, has both bevelled arched and rectangular plates with carton-pierre bead and reel and cabouchon and foliate borders, with original gilding revealed. The mirror’s scale and panel-like design suggest that it was conceived as part of a larger decorative scheme taken from the Paget family, patrons of some of the most accomplished architects and designers of the age, were known for employing the finest craftsmen.
Provenance
Possibly Sir Nicholas Bayly, 2nd Bart. (1709-1782) or more likely his son, Henry Bayly-Paget, 1st Earl of Uxbridge (1744-1812).
