A Pair of George II Mahogany Hall Armchairs
Of exceptional colour, with yoke crest rail above three pierced and shaped splat backs, with boldly carved outwardly scrolling arms and solidly shaped saddle-form seat, on distinctive cabriole legs. Belonging to a recognisable group which relate closely to the more vernacular ‘Windsor Chair’, these chairs are highly sophisticated and robust in their form, and carved in the sold mahogany. A closely related set of hall armchiars, conceivably by the same maker, line the monumental interior of the Marble Hall at Holkham Hall, Norfolk. Other comparable chairs of note, were sold as part of the collection of Peggy and David Rockerfeller, at Christies in New York in 2018.
