A Set of Eight 18th Century Japanned & Caned Chairs

A rare set of eight red japanned and caned chairs, with pleasingly faded surface and aged patina, comprised of four carver chairs and four dining or side chairs. In form reminiscent of various known groups, and in decoration and overall style comparable with Giles Grendey’s Infantado commission.

The surface of the present set has softened to the point of extreme dryness, and care has been taken to preserve this patina. Glimpses remain of the gilt japanning which once covered the chairs. The original caning has been carefully restored throughout, to decorative condition.
