A Magnificent Early 19th Century Chimneypiece in White Statuary Marble with Siena Inlays

An outstanding chimneypiece of large proportions in Greek revival style, showing two free-standing Ionic pilasters and an engaged- column at either sides functioning jambs. The frieze is finely carved with a fluted detail interrupted by Siena marble inlays in diamond shapes, supporting a breakfront moulded shelf with an egg & dart motif running along the under-shelf.

The taste for ancient Greek elements in architecture and interiors started during the mid 18th century and reached its peak at the beginning of the following century in Britain. This style was distinguished by rigourous symmetry and balanced proportions, with compositions that often recalled the structure of a Greek temple or a portico, such as in the case of the present chimneypiece.
