A 19th Century Irish Carrara Marble Chimneypiece with Plain Central Tablet

A late Recency period Statuary white marble chimneypiece of grand scale. This piece illustrates well the aesthetic shift between the more refined Neoclassical Georgian and Regency chimneypieces, and the new Victorian age of more striking and statuesque designs. A bare tablet and generous Acanthus leaf carved corbels, which break through the frieze, are reminiscent of this time. The tablet is delicately underpinned by a thin panel and set between a frieze of fielded panels. Reeded pilasters adorn the jambs and end in handsome, capped foot blocks.
